Case Study (Support for Q3)- Canada- Natural Resource- Fishing- Overfishing and its Impact

Hi kids,
Here is an example of what impact can happen to an ecosystem, habitat and society if a natural resource is overused.
This really happened to the people in Newfoundland, Canada when Miss Noelle was a little girl.

Because Newfoundland is an island (surrounded by water), the main natural resource used for industry/economic activity was fishing.  It was an essential component to the food supply,  a source of employment in some way for almost every resident of the province and the sea and fish we integral in the culture and history of the people.

Do you think these men in that boat caused a huge impact to the oceans ecosystem?

For many generations people thrived off of the resources the ocean provided.  Other countries came and brought huge fishing trawlers and dragged the ocean floors for fish and any other living things that got caught in the nets, kinda like the way a vaccum cleaner collects dust.

After many years the damage was tremendous!
It depleted the resource so badly that Newfoundland had to close its main livelyhood, main economic resource due to extensive damage.

By this time, many people lost their jobs and abilitiy to support their family. There was a great economic crisis. Adult fishermen had to be reeducated to gain new skills to work and support their families. The environment was irreparably damaged and the ocean had almost completely lost another species.
COAST UNDER STRESS- REPORT

Can you think of any natural resource in Chile that has been exploited?

UOI2-How are natural goods processed into products?

Hey kids,
Take a look at your shirt or shoes?
Where did it come from?
Take a look at the white tag in the inside!
Where was it made? Which materials were used?

Watch the clips before you investigate your own item.
Then develop an economic timeline- state all stages of development from raw, natural materials up until you are wearing the item. Then try to fill in the final steps... where will it go after you do not use it anymore? Will it affect life on the planet?
Think of all steps before and after your item.

Let´s learn about pencils & chocolate...

Where do our daily life objects come from?

Do we need natural resources to have our everday objects?

Make a list of the first 5 things you did today.
Did you need anything to get the task done? Where did you get those things?
What was it in its natural form?

Where do these the things come from? Where does it go? Why do we need it? Are these things Natural or do they come from natural things?

Hey everyone welcome to to week and todays blog!
Please take a look at the following pictures and videos and then we will have a group discussion on what you think and how you feel!
